Praxoula Antoniadou Kyriacou President United Democrats Cyprus
Brussels, 16 February 2011
Dear President,
Thank you for your informative letter regarding the upcoming elections on Cyprus, which European Liberals follow with great interest, as we share your views that the country is at a critical moment, where status quo represents no adequate answer. The Cypriot people – of both sides – should be able to enjoy the same freedoms of movement that the rest of its European sisters and brothers are taking for granted.
Therefore, in order to further these chances and increase the prospects of regaining a strong liberal force in Cyprus, European Liberal Democrats fully endorse your proposed mode of procedure of forming an electoral alliance for the May 2011 Parliamentary elections.
Reaching credible long-term targets sometimes implies taking pragmatic steps on the way – and with the United Democrats long and credible partnership within European Liberal structures, we are confident that you will contribute with liberal principles and convictions to the Cypriot society and to this electoral alliance.
The President of the Republic of Cyprus has played a wise role trying to facilitate a final solution to the Cyprus problem. Liberals should support this decision – and as was adopted by European Liberals as recently as during the 2009 ELDR Party Congress in Barcelona, the European Liberal family warmly endorse all steps that would lead to an improvement of the locked situation on the island of Cyprus.
Wishing you all the best of luck for the elections,
Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck MEP ELDR Party President Minister of State
